Cruise Ship Dosk in St Croix

st croix cruise port

Located in the heart of Frederiksted, is the only cruise ship port on St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. The pier is a popular destination for scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, and much more. However, access to the pier is restricted when there is a cruise ship in port, and only ship passengers and crew are allowed onto the pier. Snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming around the pier are not allowed when there is a ship docked both for the public's safety and for the security of the ship. A shopping area is located within walking distance to the pier.

An easy to moderate hike is required to get to the beach but it’s well worth it. Other architecturally and historically important buildings include Scale House, Danish Custom House, The Danish West Indies Company Warehouse and the Steeple Building. The hike is, however, more than worth it, rewarding its hikers with scenic landscape.

Foodies will enjoy the mix of Cajun and Caribbean cuisines and find delicious combinations in St. Croix. Tour a tasty rum distillery or take a day trip across the island to Point Udell, the easternmost point of the United States. The Ann E. Abramson Pier is named in honor of the Virgin Islands Public Works Commissioner who was responsible for much of the rejuvenation of the Frederiksted area.

Taking a bus is trickier than getting around in other ways, as the Vitran Public Bus system can run erratically sometimes. You can also rent a car and drive yourself, or take a taxi from the cruise port in Frederiksted to various destinations around the island. Taxi tours are also popular in this area, but you won’t find ride-sharing services on the island. You’ll be able to hail a taxi from the cruise port, where drivers frequently wait.

The newly renovated port welcomes you with gardens and wonderful beaches. The beach bears no amenities, and you are not allowed to drive any stick into the sand to avoid destroying turtle nests. It’s very exclusive and is only open on weekends or when cruise ships are in port all throughout the year except April to August. A group of knowledgeable voluntary guides brings the history to life through musical stories, traditional food making technics and oral narration of the island’s history.

History

There’s a little bit of everything here, including sirloins and seafood dishes, plus American style hamburgers to pub foods like fish and chips. When you cruise to St. Croix, you’ll get a truly mellow island experience and a nice break from bigger, more crowded beach destinations. Virgin Island’s biggest island, but it remains a little under the radar. Tourists tend to flock to the more famous St. Thomas, but there’s plenty to see and do in St. Croix for all types of travelers on a Caribbean cruise. Most cruise ship visits to St Croix take place in the winter months (November-March), when the weather is at its best. The summer and early autumn are hotter, more humid and wetter, with August-October the peak Caribbean hurricane season.

But what makes this activity even more interesting is getting there. In order to get there, you need to hike 2 miles from where you park your car to the pools. Be the first American to experience the sunrise at the easternmost point of the territorial United States at Point Udall. There is a sundial known as the Millennium Monument on top of the point which was erected to celebrate the azimuth of the first sunshine for the US in the year 2000. The Virgin Islands Port Authority issues a copy of the Cruise Ship Schedule prior to each sailing season.

As you make your way toward the central and far side of the island the land becomes rolling and arid, nearly desert-like, finally ending at Point Udall, which has a magnificent view of the sea. This is a great 2hour tour of the island that ends at Rainbow beach. Gecko’s Island Adventures is one of the most recommended tour operators that offer this excursion.

All USVI beaches (including on St Croix) are public and free of charge (no entry fees are required). You’ll also find boardwalk bars serving traditional American fare, like hamburgers with rum punch. Check out the hard-to-miss yellow brick Fort Christiansvaern in Christiansted for a vivid history lesson— it’s the best preserved Danish-built fort in the Virgin Islands. You can also visit an art gallery and several historical exhibits in Frederiksted’s Fort Frederik. Tipping is much like traveling in other parts of the U.S—leave 15-20% for restaurants and bars, 10-15% for taxis, and leave a dollar or two per bag for bellhops.

When the Danes landed in the 1700s they also favored this site and built the first sugar cane plantation on the island. Today ruins of the plantation still remain amidst a garden of beautiful flowers, trees, and numerous other vegetation. In December, the Crucian Christmas Festival is celebrated in Frederiksted and Christiansted, a month-long tradition complete with costumes, food, and parades for both children and adults. In Christiansted you’ll find waterfront seating and boardwalk views at Rum Runners.

Situated near Frederiksted, this restored sugar plantation offers a historical journey into St. Croix's past. The museum features a restored great house, sugar mill, and other plantation structures, giving visitors an insight into the 18th-century sugar economy and life on the plantation. St. Croix's beaches are a highlight for many visitors, offering a range of experiences from serene relaxation to vibrant beachside activities. Here are some of the best beaches, each located within a convenient distance from the cruise terminal. At the end of the pier you will be welcomed by vendors displaying souvenirs, jewelry, and t-shirts. Within the town of Fredericksted you will find several historic buildings, including the fort, and several shops.

Mind the weight or portability of what you carry as you will hike up and down with it. It’s recommended to leave the windows of your car rolled down while ensuring you leave no valuable items in your car, as there has been reported car break-ins in the area. Explore St. Croix off the beaten path in the scenic eastern coast. At the easternmost point of the island (Point Udall) is a scenic forest land trail comprised of scrubland and short grass that leads to the most secluded beaches in St. Croix. It’s an amazing experience that captures the island’s essence captured on Canvas.

On Sundays some restaurants, bars and shops are closed, but most will be open if a cruise ship is visiting. Another option for a half-day outing is to whizz through the flat, mostly agricultural countryside, past the island's large oil refinery, to St Croix's historic capital Christiansted. Hurricane Maria damaged some of the buildings in 2017, but they are still a striking ensemble.
